Posts of this type are generally fabricated from carbon steel rod.

Where a screw of suitable dimensions is available, it may serve as a practical starting point.

The present example follows this approach.

The screw is mounted in the lathe.
Care is taken not to overtighten the chuck, as excessive force may damage the threads.

The screw head is removed, and the post is brought to form.

The diameter is maintained as large as practicable while allowing a lever to move freely.

In certain cases, the post may be made slightly larger than the original.

In keeping with the original construction, the base is reduced in parallel, allowing it to be gripped and properly screwed into the plate.

The post is then installed into the plate.

The work is thus completed.
